gaji,
What I find interesting is that all these new jazz stuff is moving away from swing, and I think what Taylor Eigsti is doing is a reflection of my generation of musician who grew up listening to those kind of music. Robert Glasper does some similar, except his roots is based on hip hop.
A friend of mine arranged the opening of Samuel Barber's "excercusions" into a piece he was writing and also covered music for Elliot Smith, Theme for Chinatown.. etc. Nowdays it seem more acceptable for jazz musicians to be influenced by everything other than jazz.
kenk
I like Joey Defrancesco

But yea, I guess I am looking for something that takes more of the rhythmic feel of the music they are covering.. People have covered Beatles and other rock bands in the past too, but they usually do it in swing or other jazz-related rhythm. But nowdays, musicians seems to be doing more to re-rhythm-ize (like re-harmonize) the music they cover.
